# Project members

> Add people to a project, set their project role, change it, and remove them

Each project has its own list of members. Organization Members only see and work in the projects they are added to, with
the [project role](/team/understanding-roles#project-roles) they are given there. Owners and Admins don't need adding -
they belong to every project.

## Open the member list

In the sidebar, under **Project**, go to **Settings** → **Members**. The page is titled **Project Members**.

Everyone in the project can see this list. It shows:

| Column | What it shows |
| - | - |
| **User** | The person's name and email |
| **Role** | Their project role. Owners and Admins show **Full access** with an **Org owner** or **Org admin** badge. |
| **Status** | **Active**, or **Invited** / **Expired** for people who haven't accepted their invitation yet |
| **Added at** | When they joined the project |

An Owner or Admin who is [restricted](/team/owner-admin-restrictions) in the project shows their restricted role with a
**Restricted** badge.

<Tip>Owners and Admins can also see a project's members from **Projects** → the project → **People**.</Tip>

## Add an existing organization member

You need the Member role in the project, or to be an Owner or Admin.

    On the **Add existing org member** tab, choose them under **Select member**. Owners and Admins aren't listed - they
    already have access.

## Invite someone new into the project

Owners and Admins can invite someone who isn't in the organization yet, straight into a project:

1. Go to **Settings** → **Members** and click **Add member**.
2. Open the **Invite new user** tab.
3. Enter their **Email** and pick a **Project role**.
4. Click **Send invite**.

They join the organization as a Member, with that role in this project. To invite someone into several projects at once,
or as an Admin, [invite them from organization settings](/team/invite-users) instead.

## Change someone's project role

You need the Member role in the project, or to be an Owner or Admin.

1. Go to **Settings** → **Members**.
2. Click **⋯** on their row and choose **Change role**.
3. Pick the new role in **Change project role** and click **Update role**.

The new role applies straight away, everywhere in the project except
[protected environments](/environment/protected-environments) where they have an environment role.

On an Owner's or Admin's row, **Change role** restricts them instead. See
[Owner and Admin restrictions](/team/owner-admin-restrictions).

## Remove someone from the project

You need the Member role in the project, or to be an Owner or Admin.

1. Go to **Settings** → **Members**.
2. Click **⋯** on their row and choose **Remove member**.
3. Confirm with **Continue**.

They lose access to the project immediately, including any environment roles they had in it. Their organization
membership is not affected.

<Note>
  Owners and Admins can't be removed from a project - the menu shows *"Owners and admins can be demoted but not
  removed."* To limit an Owner or Admin in one project, [restrict them](/team/owner-admin-restrictions). To take away
  their access everywhere, change their organization role to Member.

## Leave a project

Anyone who is an organization Member can leave a project, whatever their project role: click **⋯** on your own row,
choose **Remove member** and confirm.

## Cancel a pending invitation

Owners and Admins can click **⋯** on an invited person's row and choose **Cancel invitation**. This cancels their whole
invitation to the organization, including every project it covers.

## Who can do what here

Owners and Admins who are restricted in the project can still invite people and cancel invitations. Adding, changing and
removing members needs them to be restricted to Member or not restricted at all.
