Owners and Admins have full access to every project. Sometimes that is more than they need. An Admin who looks after billing shouldn’t be one click away from deleting production, and you may want to keep yourself from changing a project by accident. A restriction lowers an Owner’s or Admin’s access in one project, or in one protected environment, to Member, Maintainer or Read-only. Everywhere else they keep full access, and they stay an Owner or Admin of the organization. While restricted, they can do exactly what that project role can do.

Rules

When restricting someone else:
  • The first time, any role can be picked.
  • If they are already restricted, the role can only be lowered. To raise it, an Owner or Admin with full access has to lift the restriction - after which it can be set again.
A restriction can’t be used to lock everyone out. The restricted person can always lift their own restriction, and any Owner or Admin with full access in the project can lift it for them.
Owners and Admins can’t be removed from a project - restricting them is how you limit them there.

Restrict yourself in a project

  1. Open the project and go to Settings → Members.
  2. Click ⋯ on your own row and choose Change role.
  3. In Restrict your access, pick Member, Maintainer or Read-only and click Update role.
To change it later, do the same - the dialog is called Change your restriction, and you can pick any role, higher or lower.

Restrict another Owner or Admin in a project

You need the Member role in the project, or full access.
  1. Go to Settings → Members.
  2. Click ⋯ on their row and choose Change role.
  3. In Restrict access, pick their role and click Update role.
If they’re already restricted, only their current role and lower roles are offered.

Lift a restriction

Click ⋯ on the restricted person’s row and choose Lift restriction. It takes effect immediately, with no confirmation, and they have full access to the project again. Lift restriction works on your own row, and an Owner or Admin with full access can use it on anyone’s row. Lifting a project restriction also removes the person’s roles in that project’s protected environments, so they get full access there too.

Restrictions in a protected environment

The same rules apply inside a protected environment, from the environment’s Members tab: Restricting someone in a protected environment only changes their access in that environment. Unprotecting the environment removes every restriction in it.

How restrictions show up

In Settings → Members, a restricted Owner or Admin shows their restricted role with an Org owner or Org admin badge and a Restricted badge. An unrestricted one shows Full access.

Restrictions and organization role changes

  • Member → Admin or Owner: their project roles and environment roles are cleared, so they start with full access everywhere.
  • Admin ↔ Owner: their project restrictions are cleared. Restrictions in protected environments stay until lifted.
  • Owner or Admin → Member: they become a regular Member. You pick their project role in each project they’re in, and their environment roles are cleared - add them to protected environments again if they still need them. See change someone’s organization role.
